Sneak Peak of the new “Latent” child theme for Genesis 2.0

June 24, 2013 Andhi 8 Comments

Latent - Genesis Child Theme sneak peak

EDIT: Latent is available now!

As some of my Twitter and Google + followers already know, I’m near completion of my first premium child theme built on the Genesis Framework (affiliate link).

This theme is a cleaner and more refined version of The Stiz Recording Studio’s website… plus it’s built on Genesis 2.0.

I’m not sure if I’ll put a theme shop on this website, team up with some other colleagues of mine who are also getting in the theme game, or launch a separate site altogether.

All comments and feedback are welcome!

I’m specifically curious if I should build in a Portfolio (with custom post type) or leave that to plugins and developers/designers… thoughts?

Add in a custom portfolio with a post type! Make it use masonry or isotopes!

If you do that, it would save me some work down the road!

I struggle with the battle though… shouldn’t that be built into a custom plugin? Then you can re-use it any time you want…

On the other side of it… it would save time, but sometimes you don’t need the excess functionality in a theme, and sometimes it’s a nice addition.

Maybe I could add a toggle on/off so you don’t have to use the post type if you don’t want too.. but all that adds to my dev time and I need to make sure I actually MAKE money doing this!

It should be in a plugin and if I was developing it for a client, it would be.

The line becomes thinner and more gray as you get into the premium theme market. People want these bells and whistles included in the theme for some reason. They don’t want to have to pay a developer to do it for them and most of them can’t do it themselves.

Let me know how this battle works out for you as it’ll be interesting to see which way you end up going with it!

What about creating a Genesis custom functions plugin and add the Portfolio custom post type in there?
Have it as a bonus for your clients and others.

The current theme uses a custom plugin… a lot has changed with the web since this theme was launched though.. I’d love to rebuild, but I don’t know if it’s worth it at this point. To the future!
